The South East Europe region will need to replace more than 30% of its current fossil fuel generation capacity by the end of 2030, and more than 95% by 2050, according to the long-term energy policy of the European Union. Power systems in Southeast Europe (SEE), being largely dependent on lignite-fired electricity, will also undergo dramatic change. By 2030, renewables will be responsible for some 50% of power output in SEE, with wind and solar accounting for two-thirds of this generation.
