NVOFA engine's capabilities can be accessed using the NVIDIA Optical Flow APIs (hereafter referred to as NVOF APIs), exposed via NVIDIA Optical Flow SDK. Optical flow sensors, like the PMW3901, help drones achieve this by tracking motion relative to the ground. The NVOFA hardware accepts a pair of YUV/RGB frames as input and generates a map of flow vectors between the two frames. The sensor has a native resolution of 752×480 pixels, a 4-fold grading and cropping algorithm is used to calculate the optical flow, the calculation speed reaches 250Hz (daytime, outdoor), and it has a very high sensitivity. It can be used to determine speed when navigating without GNSS — in buildings, underground, or in any other GNSS-denied environment.
