Relay protection excitation

Home / Relay protection excitation

Loss of excitation protection is used to protect the synchronous machine (alternator or generator) acts as induction motor when the excitation fails. It is caused by accidental tripping of field breaker, short circuit in the field circuits, poor brush contact or operating errors. Abstract-- This paper was written by a Working Group of the IEEE Power System Relay Committee to provide guidance to the industry to better coordinate generator protection with generator control. The protection function includes detection of overcurrent and undercurrent as well as supervision of the ripple.

COORDINATION OF GENERATOR PROTECTION WITH

Increasing the excitation current will increase the reactive power output. Decreasing the excitation will have the opposite effect, and in extreme cases, may result in loss of synchronism of the generator
