Polarization-maintaining fibers work by intentionally introducing a systematic linearin the fiber, so that there are two well defined polarization modes which propagate along the fiber with very distinct phase velocities. The beat length Lb of such a fiber (for a particular wavelength) is the distance (typically a few millimeters) over which the wave in one mode will experience an additional delay of one wavelength compared to the other polarization mode. Available from stock, these cables feature a high-quality polish, which leads to a typical return loss of 60 dB. Other options include cables with high extinction ratio (ER), cables with heating wire, AR-coated patch cables. This work materialized through the development of good practices, procedures and specifications documents, reflecting a certain state of the art at a given time, and the result of a consensus of all stakeholders (op lable. These modular, complex and self-contained setups also often increase laser safety and reduce the laser safety classification. It provides an expert-curated supplier directory, buyer-focused technical background information, and structured selection criteria to support professional procurement decisions.
